User facilities are specialized government-sponsored research infrastructure, such as labs, collections, field stations, or large equipment, that are available for researchers’ use to advance scientific or technical knowledge. Researchers compete for access but do not consistently acknowledge use of facilities when they publish datasets or research findings, making it difficult to assess the scientific impact of these public investments. Recently several facilities have begun to explore innovative approaches to these challenges, including adoption of ORCID.
